What is Marburg virus?

Marburg virus disease, or MVD, is a serious, often fatal disease. According to the World Health Organization, the virus causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever.

It was first discovered in 1967 by twin eruptions in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany, and Belgrade, Serbia.

The outbreak has been confirmed in the African country of Ghana.

So far, two men, 26 and 51, have died there.

Marburg virus infects humans by flying foxes and is transmitted by direct human-to-human contact.
