California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the state Monday over the current monkeypox outbreak.

In a statement, Newsom said it was issued to help  state health departments ramp up  vaccination, education and awareness efforts in response to the virus.

He continued, "We will work with the federal government to secure more vaccines, raise awareness about risk reduction, and stand up to the LGBTQ community in the fight against stigma."

On May 25, the first California case of the current monkeypox outbreak  was confirmed.

The total  in the state is now 825, compared with 5,811 cases nationally.

To date, California has administered 25,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine
